2009 Schedule of Events at Der Rosenmeister

Summer View of the Rugosa Bed

We offer informative and educational programs throughout the gardening season. All programs are free except for the rose propagation workshop. Programs are held at our nursery unless otherwise specified. We do not cancel for bad weather, so dress appropriately! You are welcome to visit our nursery and gardens at other times. Please call first to let us know you are coming.

March 19. 6:30-8:30 PM, Growing Roses- It’s Simpler Than You Think, a lecture at Cornell Cooperative Extension. Learn which roses will flourish in your garden. Find out about planting, fertilizing, watering, and pruning. It’s really not any more complicated than the care of other woody plants.

April 18, 25; May 2, 9. Noon to 3. Spring Chores in the Rose Garden
Learn about spring chores as we do clean-up pruning on our roses and tie the climbers and ramblers in place. Bring your garden gloves! We will be mulching and planting new beds as well and could always use a hand.

May 16, Saturday, 9 to 1. Cornell Cooperative Extension Spring Garden Fair and Plant Sale, Ithaca High School, Cayuga Street
We will be selling a selection of our roses along with 40 other nursery vendors. Come early for the best selection.

May 23, 30. 10 to noon. Successful Rose Growing—Siting, Sustenance, and Selection
Are you overwhelmed by the number of roses to choose from? Learn how to select the right roses for the right places and how to take care of them after planting.

June 6, Saturday, 10 to noon, Yesterday’s Roses for Today’s Gardens
Roses have been grown since the dawn of civilization. Learn about their fascinating history and see how these time-tested beauties can enhance your garden. Bring one (or more) home with you and preserve a piece of horticultural history.

June 19, Friday, 4–7 P.M. Annual Open House
Join us for our annual garden party. The colors and fragrances of hundreds of roses in full bloom at once are overwhelming. In England, this time of year is referred to as high rose tide.

June 20, Saturday, 10 to noon. Hybrid Rugosas
Rugosa hybrids are beautiful, very hardy roses. They are salt-tolerant, disease resistant, fragrant, and they set edible hips. We are sure at least one will be just right for your garden.

June 27, Saturday, 10 to noon, Climbers and Ramblers: Selecting, Growing, and Training
Don’t have much space in your garden? Go vertical! Learn which climbers and ramblers do best in central New York and how to care for and use them in your landscape.

July 11, Saturday, 10 to 1. Rose Propagation Workshop
This is sure to be a popular workshop. Learn several techniques of rose propagation. Prepare and root five cuttings from among our non-patented roses. There is a $20 fee for this workshop. Pre-registration is required.

July 18, Saturday, 10 to noon. Summer Chores in the Rose Garden—Pruning, Insect and Disease Control
This is the time, as the first big flush of bloom is ending, to prune roses to ensure quick and full re-bloom. It’s not as complicated as you may think. Learn about organic approaches to insect and disease control, too.
